ST. GEORGE, Utah - - + Video A resolution declaring mental health issues to be a public health crisis at Utah higher education institutions has passed through the Utah Legislature. H.C.R. 16, sponsored by Edward Redd, strongly urges Utah’s government and community groups to seek productive, long-term solutions to address the crisis.

The resolution recognizes Utah’s high rate of suicide and attempted suicide due to mental health issues. It states Utah currently ranks in the top 10 for most suicides in the nation, and fifth among youth.

Over 100 students enrolled in Utah higher ed institutions attempted suicide during the 2015 academic year.

Changes at Dixie State University’s Health and Wellness Center and instituting the Hope Squad on campus are expected to help students who may be struggling with dismal thoughts.
